COURSES AFTER 12TH:

Engineering

Engineering as a CareerEngineering is one of the most favoured streams taken up by science students. Engineering is the discipline, art, skill and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, economic, mathematical, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. Engineering is further divided into various streams. Some of the most popular streams today are Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, IT Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc. Apart from these there are various streams like Aerospace Engineering, Printing & Packaging Technology Engineering, Marine Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, etc. Engineers are intelligent people who concentrate on problem solving.
Prerequisites: Interest in maths and reasoning, ability to solve problems
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in Science stream with PCM score above 50%
Colleges: IITs, NITs, SP College, VJTI, KJ Somaiya COE, DJ Sanghvi, TSEC, etc.
Entrance exams: JEE, AIEEE, MHT-CET (All this maybe ditched for a single exam from next year)

Medicine

Medicine is another favoured stream. Medicine is the science and art of healing. It encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness in human beings. Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints & traction, prostheses, biologics, ionizing radiation and others. The most prevalent courses one can apply for in medicine are MBBS, BAMS and BDS. If biology really interests you, you should go for medicine.
Prerequisites: Interest in biology
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in Science stream with PCB score above 50%
Colleges: Grant Medical College, Seth G.S. Medical College, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical college, Topiwala National Medical College, etc.
Entrance exams: NEET, MHT-CET

Management

Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. In India, you can pursue Bachelor of Business Administration(BBA) or Bachelor of Management Studies(BMS) degree. After you graduate, you can specialize in various fields of management.
Prerequisites: Interest in planning, management, leadership skills
Eligibility: 10+2 exam
Colleges: NMIMS, Symbiosis, St. Xavier’s, Sydenham, HR, etc.
Entrance exams: NMAT, SET, BBA CET

Information Technology

Information Technology (IT) is concerned with technology to treat information. IT has now become the backbone of the economy and accounts for the highest proportion of exports from India. In fact, IT deserves to get credit to bring India to the forefront of global economy. It is expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace since the IT has now become integral to organisation’s survival & growth. The most favoured course in Mumbai for IT is B.Sc(IT). One can also be an IT engineer by doing an engineering course.
Prerequisites: Interest in technology, problem solving ability
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in Science stream with PCM score above 50%
Colleges: SIES, Ruparel, etc.
Entrance exams: None. Maths score in 10+2 is considered

Law

Career in LawLaw is a system of rules and guidelines which are enforced through social institutions to govern behaviour, wherever possible. It shapes politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a social mediator of relations between people. To be a lawyer, one should be quick witted and should be able to argue well. In India, there are two types of law programmes. One can be done just after 10+2 and is a 5 year course. It usually is a B.A. L.L.B. or a B.Sc. L.L.B. course. You can also do it after graduating.
Prerequisites: Quick wittedness, ability to argue
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in any stream with score above 45% for 5 yr course or Bachelors degree with score above 45% for 3 yr course
Colleges: Govt. Law College, Advani Law College, etc.
Entrance exams: CLAT, LSAT

Finance

Finance is often defined simply as the management of money or “funds” management. Finance is what runs each company. And it is quite evident that somebody should be managing the finances. If you are interested in managing accounts, you can be a Chartered Account. If investment banking is what interests you, you should go for being a Chartered Financial Analyst. CAs work in all fields of business and finance, including audit, taxation, financial and general management. Some are engaged in public practice work, others work in the private sector and some are employed by government bodies. The CFA Program is a graduate level self-study program offered by the CFA Institute to investment and financial professionals.
Prerequisites: Should be good with numbers, should be able to manage finances easily
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in any stream with atleast passing marks
Colleges: To be done under internship
Entrance exams: CA-CPT, CFA-ICFAI

Banking

From the good old days, banking sector has been thought as the most lucrative sector to work at. And this is true till date. Some students’ parents may insist you to get a government job. If that’s the case and if you are good with numbers, banking is certainly an option for you. Working at any bank, especially a government one, is promising as you are bound to grow. One can start working in a bank right after s/he’s out of 10+2 or even after graduation. If one bags a job at a nationalised bank, its considered to be a secure job, something that your parents maybe proud about. Apart from that, there are a lot of perks you can enjoy, like national holidays, short working hours, etc. You can even take up a part time job as most banks work till 3pm only.
Prerequisites: Should be good with numbers, should be able to manage finances easily
Eligibility: 10 or 10+2 exam in any stream score above 50% for Clerk exam, Graduation in any stream for PO exam, Graduation in a special field for Bank Specialist Officer
Colleges: None. Bank train you themselves.
Entrance exams: CWE for banks under IBPS, Private exams by other banks

Art & Fashion

For the people with a creative bent of mind, art is the most appropriate career option. Art need not be just being an artist, painting on the canvas. There are different faculties in arts itself. One can be an artist, a graphic designer, a fashion designer, a web designer and what not. You just need to look at how creative you are and work out something that suits you the best. Artists are in great demand these days and are paid good as well.
Prerequisites: Should have a creative bent of mind
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in any stream for NIFT CET for B F.Tech., Graduation in any stream for NIFT CET for M F.Tech.
Colleges: NIFT for fashion, JJ School of Arts for applied arts, Certain colleges and numerous institutes train you in Digital Art
Entrance exams: NIFT CET

Defence

Defence is looked upon with due respect by every citizen and gives us a feeling of pride. There are many options that you can try for. You can go for NDA, CDS, SSC etc. Your career is not only limited to being a soldier but also, you can go for special posts which require you to be an engineer. You maybe commissioned to posts like Air Traffic Controller (ATC), etc. which aren’t traditional military jobs. Also, just in case you move out of military, you will have various options like joining any airline, arms and ammunition sector etc. which are promising and well paying.
Prerequisites: Should be brave
Eligibility: 10+2 exam  for NDA exam, Graduation in for CDS, SSC
Colleges: You will be posted and trained at an academy if you clear the exam
Entrance exams: NDA, CDS , SSC entrance exams

Hotel Management

If you like interacting with others and want to make a career in the hospitality industry, then Hotel Management is the best option for you. The hotel business is a lucrative business and it has long attracted ambitious young people into its fold. Hotel Management professionals are the people who make you feel at home and provide invaluable service. This job may require you to put in long hours and hard work but it has its own rewards and excellent career growth.
Prerequisites: Should be patient, courteous
Eligibility: 10+2 exam in any stream
Colleges: NIFT for fashion, JJ School of Arts for applied arts, Certain colleges and numerous institutes train you in Digital Art
Entrance exams: NCHMCT JEE, DTE HMCT

Education

Become a TeacherTeaching is considered to be the one of the most noble professions. If you have a flair for teaching and have a lot of patience, you can be a teacher.  The role of teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out at a school or other place of formal education. For being a teacher , you may have to do the study of pedagogy, the science of teaching. The most common course you can take up for being a teacher is D. Ed. With a B. Ed. degree, you can teach in any school in India. The best part about teaching job is that they have fixed timings.

Eligibility: 10+2 exam in any stream
Colleges: KJ Somaiya, SNDT, Bombay Teacher’s Training Institute
Entrance exams: D. Ed. CET

Other Courses

As you can see there are various options you can choose from. In the meantime, you can also do the following short term courses that can help you ahead in life. You can brush up your English, learn Math techniques, or even better your general aptitude.

NOW WHAT?

You maybe appearing for your 10th/12th (SSC/HSC) exam or by the time you read this, you may have already appeared for them. So what do you do now. The first thing you should do is to basically identify your interests. You can probably take an aptitude test that will tell you what your interests are. Research for the courses that you maybe interested in and find out the dates of the entrance exam. Once that’s done, you should start coaching yourself for the entrance exam.
